Report by Pat Palmer, 5/11/2007
On May 5, 2007, about thirty volunteers cleaned debris from the D&R canal and plucked invasive garlic mustard along one side of Turning Basin park. Special thanks and congratulations to all volunteers! Most stayed after for a picnic lunch and were delighted by Mercer County Wildlife Rehabilitation, which exhibited a Peregrine falcon, a broad-winged hawk, a great horned owl, and a turkey vulture.
There was less debris than in past years, likely due to recent heavy rains washing stuff downstream. Debris piles accumulated at Turning Basin, Port Mercer, and Harrison St; the trash was picked up so quickly (by 3 pm that day) that we failed to get a photograph of the haul, but found were the usual large items, including a rotting folding table and a truck tire with hubcap.
FOPOS and PUWW would like to express thanks and appreciation to all the participants who contributed to make this event possible. These include (not a complete list--if you know someone who's missing, please email ):
